Putin Authorizes TotalEnergies to Sell Stake in Arctic LNG 2 Project

Russian President Vladimir Putin has given the green light for the sale of TotalEnergies’ 10% stake in the Arctic LNG 2 project, a significant liquefied natural gas venture located in northern Siberia. This decision allows NordLine, a subsidiary of Russian gas giant Novatek, which already holds a 60% stake, to acquire TotalEnergies’ share. The financial terms of this transaction remain undisclosed.

The Arctic LNG 2 project has encountered numerous obstacles, particularly after the imposition of U.S. sanctions in late 2023. These sanctions led to the suspension of participation by foreign shareholders, including TotalEnergies. The French company had previously suffered substantial financial setbacks, with billions in losses tied to its Russian energy investments following the conflict in Ukraine.

Alongside TotalEnergies, other foreign stakeholders in the project include Chinese energy firms and a Japanese consortium, each holding a 10% interest. The sale of TotalEnergies’ stake underscores Russia’s strategic move to reinforce domestic ownership of key energy assets amid ongoing international sanctions that have hindered foreign involvement in the nation’s energy sector.

This development is part of a broader trend where analysts are closely monitoring the status of foreign investments in Russian LNG initiatives. As Europe intensifies its restrictions on Russian gas imports, the future of these investments remains uncertain, signaling potential shifts in the global energy landscape.
