In July and August, at least 12 Chinese energy assets reportedly operated inside Taiwan’s EEZ. One was spotted within 50km of restricted waters around the Pratas.

Experts say this fits a pattern of incremental encroachment designed to “normalize” contested activities. Commercial flags may cloak strategic intent.

Taipei’s low-key reaction has raised eyebrows among regional watchers. Some fear that inaction could be interpreted as acceptance.

Complicating matters are legal gray areas and limited capacity to police a wide maritime domain.
