Amid rising diesel prices in the United States, former President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to cease attacks on Russian oil refineries and related facilities. Trump highlighted that these strikes are exacerbating a global fuel shortage, as U.S. diesel prices have surged past $6 per gallon, reaching unprecedented levels. He suggested that Ukraine should shift its focus away from targeting Russian diesel infrastructure and concentrate on other military objectives instead.
Ukraine has been intensifying its long-range strikes against Russia’s oil and gas sectors, disrupting refining operations and contributing to fuel shortages within Russia. Additionally, Moscow has imposed restrictions on diesel exports, further tightening global supply lines. This situation has been aggravated by disruptions in oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The International Energy Agency reported that diesel and gasoil exports from Gulf countries in August plummeted to just over a quarter of their levels before the war.
Ukrainian officials maintain that Russia’s energy sector plays a crucial role in financing Moscow’s military endeavors in Ukraine. Consequently, Ukrainian forces have continued to target Russian oil facilities, including refineries and storage locations.
