Keir Starmer Resigns After Finalizing India-UK Trade Agreement

Keir Starmer, the outgoing British Prime Minister, marked a significant achievement in international diplomacy by finalizing the long-anticipated Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the UK, just before announcing his resignation. This agreement was reached during discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit 2026. Both leaders set July 15 as the date for implementing the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which aims to enhance the robust trade relationship currently valued at approximately £48 billion annually.

Starmer, who prioritized strengthening ties with India during his tenure, viewed the trade deal as a crucial step for economic growth. He emphasized the increasing global economic influence of India and the mutual benefits of facilitating easier and more affordable trade. Since assuming leadership of the Labour Party after its electoral defeat in 2019, Starmer focused on fostering a stronger partnership with India, particularly through trade, security, education, technology, and climate change initiatives.

Before embarking on his political career, Starmer had a distinguished career in law, serving as the Director of Public Prosecutions. He rose to the position of Prime Minister following Labour’s sweeping victory in the 2024 elections. Despite initial successes in stabilizing the UK’s economy and implementing domestic reforms, Starmer’s leadership faced significant challenges due to policy disputes and political setbacks, ultimately leading to a decline in support.

In a heartfelt resignation speech, Starmer acknowledged that his parliamentary colleagues no longer saw him as the right leader to guide the Labour Party into the next general election. He accepted their decision with respect and gratitude, concluding a notable chapter in British politics. Throughout his leadership, he worked to rebuild connections with the British Indian community and emphasized the importance of closer UK-India relations.
