Many people experience the frustration of buying a basil plant from the supermarket, only to see it wither and die after just a few weeks. While it’s easy to assume that the plant wasn’t cared for properly, the actual problem often begins before the basil even arrives at your home. Supermarket basil is typically sold in pots densely packed with multiple young plants. This arrangement, while visually appealing, leads to competition among the seedlings for water, sunlight, and nutrients, ultimately weakening the entire plant.
To give supermarket basil a better chance at thriving, a simple yet effective solution is to separate the plants into smaller groups. Carefully removing the basil from its original pot and gently dividing the roots into three or four sections can make a big difference. It’s important to keep as many roots intact as possible during this process. Once divided, each section should be replanted in its own pot filled with fresh compost, watered thoroughly, and placed in a warm, bright location to encourage healthy growth.
Regular maintenance, such as trimming the tops of the basil plants, can further promote bushier growth and help prevent premature flowering. By providing more space and better conditions, the separated basil plants are more likely to remain healthy and continue producing fresh leaves. This method transforms what is often a short-lived kitchen herb into a long-lasting supply for culinary use and home gardening.
A practical test of this method demonstrated promising results: after dividing a single supermarket basil plant into four sections, three of the sections continued to thrive and produced fresh leaves over the course of a month. This approach highlights how giving basil more room to grow can significantly extend its productivity and lifespan.
