China has reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time in history after defeating France 4-3 in a penalty shootout. The match, held in Rabat, concluded in a goalless draw during regular time, leading to a tense shootout where goalkeeper Niu Ziqi played a pivotal role by saving two penalties.
Despite France’s dominant play in the first half, they were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. China showed improvement in the second half, thanks to tactical adjustments made by coach Ma Xiaoxu. However, both teams failed to score, pushing the match to penalties.
During the shootout, China’s Liu Yuxi and Liu Yuke successfully converted their initial attempts. Niu Ziqi then made a critical save against France’s Lea Motyka, leveling the score at 2-2. China’s Yang Lan and Cheng Wandi scored their penalties, while Niu’s save against Lisa Mabilon secured China’s 4-3 victory.
China’s journey to the knockout stage was marked by an impressive performance, finishing at the top of Group E with three consecutive wins. The team triumphed over Kenya 3-0, Samoa 7-0, and the United States 3-2, showcasing their strength in the tournament.
Looking ahead, China is set to face Brazil in the quarterfinals on November 1. Brazil advanced to this stage after overcoming Poland in another dramatic penalty shootout, winning 8-7 following a 3-3 draw.
