Nvidia Corp. is deepening its alliance with OpenAI through a massive strategic investment of up to $100 billion, in exchange for an equity stake in the AI powerhouse. This deal structure transforms the relationship from a simple customer-supplier dynamic into a deeply integrated partnership, aligning the futures of the world’s most valuable chipmaker and its most prominent AI customer.

The investment is designed to be rolled out in phases, directly tied to the construction of a new global AI infrastructure. The first major milestone involves a $10 billion payment from Nvidia, which will be triggered as soon as the first gigawatt of the planned 10-gigawatt computing grid is deployed. This performance-based approach mitigates risk and ensures both parties are focused on tangible outcomes.

This capital injection is earmarked for a singular, ambitious purpose: to build the world’s most advanced data centers for AI development. OpenAI will leverage this infrastructure to train and operate its next-generation models, which require exponentially more computing power than current systems. The deal formalizes Nvidia’s role as the preferred hardware partner for this massive undertaking.

The partnership is seen by industry leaders as a move to secure their respective leadership positions. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, emphasized the long history of collaboration that led to this moment, calling it a plan to “power the next era of intelligence.” Sam Altman of OpenAI echoed this, highlighting compute as the fundamental building block for future economic and technological progress.

The initial phase of this new infrastructure is set to launch in the latter half of 2026, using Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin platform. This deal not only solves OpenAI’s pressing need for more computing power to serve its vast user base but also guarantees Nvidia a cornerstone client for its next wave of AI-focused hardware, cementing its market dominance.
